After my daughter was discharged from Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, we were admitted to a rehabilitation hospital in Westchester County. Its a hospital for children who have had traumatic accidents or surgeries and all kinds of tragic stuff happen to them. These kids come here to recover stabilize and prepare to return back home. They sent my daughter in an ambulance and we followed behind in our car. We arrive and walk in the building, and I’m nervous because I don’t know what kind of place this was, or what went on here or what to expect.. I’m nervous because I didn’t know what we would see. We are walking down the hall to the room where my daughter is. Along the way we see children some of whom must have just healed from severe burns, some kids with things like Down’s Syndrome, Some children could only stand with the assistance of this assisted standing device, some on walkers and some in wheelchairs, some little girls had no hair etc. For me, it was an incredibly sad scene for me. But, apparently the kids themselves must have been looking at a totally different scene than I was. or maybe THEY WERE LOOKING AT THE SAME SCENE, BUT JUST LOOKING AT IT A DIFFERENT WAY. The laughter and giggling and playing and the HAPPY, PEACEFUL, POSITIVE, PRODUCTIVE ENERGY that was radiating from those children was astounding. These kids didn’t care about the appearance of their faces, they weren’t insecure or scared to go play because they had illnesses or afflictions or insecure because they thought no one would want to play with them. They didn’t judge each other based on what their exteriors looked like. THEY SAW AND FOCUSED ON THEIR ABILITIES AND NOT THEIR DISABILITIES! They knew that they had the ability to laugh and smile and play, some had the ability to run. some had the ability to write and draw and be happy. THEY DIDN’T LET WHAT THEY COULDN’T DO, STOP THEM FROM DOING ALL OF THE THINGS THAT THEY COULD DO! Instead they were just themselves, and just did what they did best, and they didn’t worry about anything else!
What kind of wounds do we have from our pasts that we are leaning on and wont let go of, that are holding us back from achieving our greatness or happiness? How many of us are insecure about the way we will look or how it will appear to others if we try to pursue our dreams and we fail? How many of us think we aren’t smart enough to come up with the next big business idea or product or song, or movie, book or invention so we never even bother to try? How many of us say I’m to old to go back to school or to start this or try that? How many of us tell ourselves that I’m not good at this or I’m not good at that. How many tell ourselves we cant do this or we cant do that so we end up doing NOTHING!
Hey, lets do what the little kids were doing. Lets just be ourselves! Lets do what we were meant to do and what we do best! Lets go out boldly and play and BE HAPPY! Lets go out boldly and start writing that book, register for those classes, start making plans for that new business, start preparing new recipes for your restaurant or food truck, start designing for your jewelry or clothing line, take that test, get that certification or license. Write that song, choreograph that dance, finish this last semester or year of school with a bang and most importantly BE HAPPY! Don’t worry about your past, or how many times you have tried and “Failed”, don’t worry about what you cant do! LETS FOCUS ON WHAT WE CAN DO, AND WHAT WE DO BEST, AND LETS DO IT TO THE ABSOLUTE BEST OF OUR ABILITIES!
LETS FOCUS ON OUR ABILITIES INSTEAD OF OUR DISABILITIES!
ITS SO EASY, EVEN A LITTLE KID CAN DO IT!
